Irina Muresanu

Irina Muresanu was born in Bucharest, Romania and has been living in Boston since 1994. She holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois, an Artist Diploma and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory in Boston. She studied with Stefan Gheorghiu in Bucharest and with French violinist Michèle Auclair in Boston.

His international awards include the Montreal International Violin Competition, the Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium, the UNISA International String Competition (South Africa), the Washington International String Competition (USA), the "George Enesco" International Violin Competition (Romania), the "Tibor Varga" International Competition (Switzerland), as well as the Presser Music Award for Young Talent and the Arthur Foote Award from the Harvard Musical Association.

Irina Muresanu has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Geneva), Syracuse Symphony, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, Transvaal Philharmonic (Pretoria), Orchestre de la Radio Flamande (Brussels), Boston Philharmonic, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra (Boston), Romanian National Radio Orchestra, and the Miami Symphony Orchestra among others. She has performed in recital in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Hong Kong Performing Arts Centre among others. She can often be heard on Boston's WGBH and other NPR (National Public Radio) stations.

Ms. Muresanu is very active in the field of chamber music and has participated in the Bargemusic Festival in New York, the Rockport Festival in Massachusetts, the Bay Chambers Concert Season, the Bowdoin Festival in Maine, the Strings in the Mountains Festival in Colorado, the Maui Chamber Music Festival in Hawaii, the Reizend Music Festival in the Netherlands, the Festival van de Leie in Belgium, and the Rencontres de Musiciennes in France.

Ms. Muresanu's discography includes the world premiere recording of Marion Bauer's Sonata for Violin and Piano (with pianist Virginia Eskin) for Albany Records and a recording of chamber music by the composer Erich Komgold released by the Radio VPRO in Amsterdam. In June 2005 she received the Copland Fund Recording Grant, which enabled her to record the complete violin and piano sonatas of Willam Bolcom for the Centaur label, with pianist Michael Lewin. Ms. Muresanu received a "Special Mention" for her recording of Schoenberg's Fantasia for Violin and Piano at the 3rd International Competition for Recordings of Contemporary Masters in Vienna.
